  • Sheffield tram operation wins Best Customer Initiative title
  • Company Highly Commended in Operator of the Year category

Stagecoach Supertram has won a top honour for its focus on customers at the inaugural Light Rail Awards 2007.

The company, which operates the 28km light rail network incorporating three routes in the city of Sheffield, won the Best Customer Initiative award.

Andy Morris, Managing Director of Stagecoach Supertram, collected the award, which was made for the company's innovative approach with the introduction of low-floor buses on the Sheffield-Stockbridge corridor.

Howard Johnston, Editor-in-Chief of awards sponsors Tramways & Urban Transit, said: "I think the significance of a bus service taking the top honours at a primarily light rail-focused awards ceremony speaks for itself. The innovative nature of this route extension offers a high frequency of travel from reliable and dependable vehicles from a trusted name."

Stagecoach Supertram, which carries some 14 million passengers a year, was also Highly Commended in the Operator of the Year category.

Andy Morris said: "These awards reflect all the hard work by Supertram staff. We are very proud of our transport system and the service it provides within the wider community, and this shows in the feedback we receive from our customers."

TV news and current affairs presenter Nicholas Owen, who handed out the awards, said Supertram was a "modest jewel in the crown of modern light rail".

The awards, which were held in London, publicly honoured the top performers in the UK's light rail industry for their achievements.

Stagecoach is Britain's biggest tram operator and also runs and maintains the 37km Manchester Metrolink system on behalf of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive.
